Measures of maximal entropy

We extend the results of Walters on the uniqueness of invariant measures with maximal entropy on compact groups to an arbitrary locally compact group. We show that the maximal entropy is attained at the left Haar measure and the measure of maximal entropy is unique.

Evolution of entanglement after a local quench

We study free electrons on an infinite half-filled chain, starting in the ground state with a bond defect. We find a logarithmic increase of the entanglement entropy after the defect is removed, followed by a slow relaxation towards the value of the homogeneous chain. The coefficients depend continuously on the defect strength.

Towards an Optimal Distributed Algorithm for Maximal Independent Set

The Maximal Independent Set (MIS) problem is one of the basics in the study of locality in distributed graph algorithms. This paper presents an extremely simple randomized algorithm providing a near-optimal local complexity for this problem, which incidentally, when combined with some known techniques, also leads to a near-optimal global complexity. Classical MIS algorithms of Luby [STOC’85] an...

Quantum Entanglement and Entropy

Entanglement is the fundamental quantum property behind the now popular field of quantum transport of information. This quantum property is incompatible with the separation of a single system into two uncorrelated subsystems. Consequently, it does not require the use of an additive form of entropy. We discuss the problem of the choice of the most convenient entropy indicator, focusing our atten...
